What your business needs to know regarding potential Russian cyberwarfare

Intelligence finds that Russia has initiated cyberwarfare techniques against Ukraine as military engagement escalates. Given the potential for similar attacks on US-based targets, we want to provide an update on what we know so far, and the steps we are taking to ensure the ongoing fidelity of the cybersecurity services we deliver to you for the protection of your business.

What we know so far: cyberattacks targeting Ukraine

  • Malware — New malware dubbed WhisperGate requests ransom payment and destroys files even if the ransom is paid.

  • Website Defacement — 70 attempts have been made to deface Ukrainian government websites with 10 being successful.

  • Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks — Targets include Ukraine’s armed forces, defense ministry, public radio, and 2 large banks. Several vital services were turned offline, and people were unable to access their bank accounts, use mobile apps, or issue online payments.

  • Many suspect a potential attack on the Ukrainian power grid as was executed during the 2015 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Actions to ensure protection of your business

We are in active communication with all our technology partners to exchange real-time threat intelligence that may impact our operations and are conducting ongoing audits of our infrastructure and processes to ensure defense against possible exploitation from Russian state-sponsored threat actors.   • Remind employees of the role they play in keeping your business secure. For example, employees should actively look out for indicators of a potential business email compromise attack

  • Be skeptical—Last-minute changes in wiring instructions or recipient account information must be verified.

  • Double check that URL—Ensure the URL in the email is associated with the business it claims to be from.

  • Spelling counts—Be alert to misspelled hyperlinks in the actual domain name.

Beware of “Fake Attachment” Gmail Phishing Scam

The way this phishing scam works is the attacker creates an email address to disguise themselves as someone you know. Then they send you an email with an attachment, like a PDF or Word doc, that looks legitimate.

When you click the attachment to see a preview of it, you get redirected to a Google sign-in page where you enter your credentials. The problem is, those attachments aren’t attachments – as per the discovery of Wordfence. For complete article, click here.

  1. Now with (some) snow here, we thought we would share some troubleshooting techniques in case your Internet goes down

  2. Don’t laugh, but is the power on? Is your computer powered up, is your Internet Service Provider (ISP), such as Comcast / FIOS / RCN) powered up?

  3. Ok, everything is up but I can’t connect. Reboot your firewall if you have one, and then your computer.

  4. If you have FIOS, you may need to disconnect the battery for your Optical Network Terminal (ONT) and power it off and back on.Finally, your provider may be experiencing an outage. Call their support number and register a complaint. If they take days to get back up, you may be able to claim a refund. FIOS Support is 800.837.4966 and Comcast 800.934.6489.

  5. Most of all, talk to us AHEAD of time to plan for a backup. If having your Internet up and running is a primary concern for your business, we can help you with services such as failover and redundancy solutions, UPS backups, and generators.

Security Alert: WannaCry Ransomware Attack

The latest security threat is called “WannaCry Ransomware Attack.” Many businesses and organizations around the world have been attacked in the last couple of days, including Fedex in the U.S. Security experts said the attack appeared to be caused by a self-replicating piece of software that enters companies and organizations when employees click on email attachments, then spreads quickly internally from computer to computer when employees share documents and other files.

Some businesses default to the built-in ISP firewall to help protect its computer network, which is bare minimum protection for a home network. We at SkyViewTek recommend a proper business-grade firewall – like SonicWALL – be used to help protect a business computer network.

A cheap power strip might protect equipment from power surges, but it does nothing to help when the power goes out and your computers and servers come to a halting crash. For that, you’ll want a battery backup, also known as an uninterruptible power supply (or UPS).

In the middle of updating a key document, the power goes out and your computer shuts down without warning. Result is – you lose all your changes to that important document. Has this ever happened to you?

At the bare minimum, you need enough juice in your UPS unit to give your computer system adequate time to shut down properly. That’s the absolute acceptable minimum. If your UPS unit doesn’t have enough juice to provide for the system from the moment the power cuts out until the moment it has successfully shut down, you’re risking damage to the machine and data loss.

Microsoft has made some updates to the way Outlook communicates (MAPI-over-HTTP) with its popular Cloud Exchange service Office365 and as of October 31, 2017, they will stop allowing the old method (RPC over HTTP) to connect at all.

There are patches available for Outlook 2010 and up that must be applied before the Oct 31st deadline. Users of Outlook 2007 and below are going to be forced to upgrade from their old outlook versions to a newer version of Outlook if they plan to continue working with Office365 for mail.
